Fatal Car Wreck in Shelby, NC Leaves Passenger Dead | Shapiro, Washburn & Sharp

Brian Swindle will be charged felony to death by vehicle and second degree murder after his girlfriend, Megan Sanders was killed in a car crash last month in Shelby, NC It was determined that Swindle was to blame.  Investigators said that Swindle was driving at an estimated speed of 75 mph when he crossed the center line and crashed into a tree.  Sanders,18, was seriously injured and would later die in the hospital.

Friends and Family gathered in Cecil M. Burton funeral home in Shelby to pay their last respects to Megan. Sanders’ mother was has been deeply mourning her daughter’s death and hopes that somehow it may serve as a lesson on the dangers of drinking and driving.  Swindle will now have to face the criminal consequences for what he did, however, that will never take the place of having Megan Sanders alive and well enjoying time once again with her mother; that can never be replaced.  He turned himself on Thursday night after investigators spent a few days looking for him.

The National Security Council states that every 30 minutes someone dies in an alcohol-related crash. Alcohol-related motor vehicle crashes killed over 17,000 people in 2005 alone (latest figures available). Alcohol is a factor in 6% of all traffic crashes, and over 40% of all fatal crashes.  It is clearly apparent that young drivers are at particular risk to be involved in alcohol-related crashes. Drivers should be sensible enough not to drive when under the influence of alcohol and or any prescription drugs.  The best defense against a drunk driver is to make them stop driving or ask to be let out of the car as soon as possible. Unfortunately, in Sanders case she may not have been able to get Swindle to stop or let her out before this tragic crash.
