NC Accident Kills One, Injures Four | Shapiro, Washburn & Sharp

A two-car accident on Highway 70 near Havelock, North Carolina (NC), has killed one person and landed four others in the hospital. North Carolina Highway Patrol troopers determined that on the afternoon of July 16, 2011, a boat being towed by an SUV ran off the side of the road, and hit a post holding up a string of traffic lights at the corner of Hickamn Hill Loop Road. The SUV then flipped and crashed into another vehicle.

The SUV’s driver was able to escape the crash with injuries, but his wife lost her life before being transported to a hospital. The driver and two passengers in the other vehicle also suffered injuries.

The SUV driver told troopers he’s not sure why or how the crash happened, and the accident is still under investigation. No charges have been filed at this time, but authorities do not suspect drugs or alcohol played a role.

This was a truly tragic accident, and our thoughts are with the victims and their families. Car accidents can happen at any time, for any reason. It’s difficult to imagine the pain this family is experiencing after such a senseless car crash.

Many people underestimate how difficult it can be to drive while towing a boat or trailer behind their vehicle. Though the cause of this accident isn’t clear yet, it was certainly made worse by the sheer weight of the boat being towed behind the SUV.
