Concussions are one of the most common types of brain injuries. Because symptoms of these types of injuries don’t always present themselves right away, concussion victims often are not aware they have an injury for some time after the event, which can put them at risk for serious medical complications. This is why it is important that any victim who has suffered a blow to the head should seek medical attention immediately to ensure the proper diagnosis is made and any necessary treatment and/or monitoring begins.

Treatment for a brain injury will be dependent on how serious the injury is. Some brain injuries will only require simple treatments. The victim’s doctor may recommend rest, along with over-the-counter medication and instructions to monitor symptoms. There may or may not be a follow-up appointment, depending on how well the victim is recovering. Mild brain injuries typically do not require long-term care.

Victims who suffer more severe brain injuries face extended treatments. Anyone who has suffered a serious brain injury should follow their doctors’ instructions and follow through with all recommend treatments because failure to do could result in permanent damage.

Treatment for serious brain injuries often include:

  • Emergency Care: When a victim is brought to the emergency room with a serious brain injury, the medical team is focused on the victim’s blood supply and oxygen, keeping their blood pressure from crashing, and stopping any additional injury.
  • Medication: In some situations, the doctor may prescribe certain medications, including anti-seizure medications, diuretics, or coma-inducing drugs.
  • Surgery: The victim may need surgery to remove blood clots that have formed in and around the brain, to stop bleeding in the brain, repair skull fractures, or to open up the skull in order to relieve building pressure.
  • Rehabilitation: The majority of victims who suffer a serious or severe brain injury usually require rehabilitative therapy and care. This can include treatments with physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapist, psychiatrists, and vocational counselors.
